Writers Workshop Application

Interested writers are urged to apply early. The director of the program will review all applications.

Admissions decisions will be made on a rolling basis for the Fiction, Literary Nonfiction, Poetry, Literary Hybrid/Book Arts, and Teachers Workshops.

For the Novel Workshop, the application deadline is March 15, 2014. Admissions decisions will be sent in late March.

Application Uploads

Please choose the workshop to which you would like to apply. Application requirements are different for each program, so please be sure you have chosen the correct workshop in the Workshop Preference dropdown list below.


Fiction Applicants: In addition to a current resume, please submit one short story or an excerpt from a longer work.


Literary Nonfiction Applicants: In addition to a current resume, please submit one short nonfiction piece or an excerpt from a longer work.


Poetry Applicants: In addition to a current resume, please submit three or four poems.


Literary Hybrid/Book Arts Applicants: In addition to a current resume, please submit either three to four poems, a short essay, short story, or hybrid work (your sample should be no more than five pages).


Writing Online Applicants: In addition to uploading a current resume, please answer the following questions: 1) Day to day, what kinds of writing do you do? What resources and tools do you use? (Please do not exceed 150 words.) 2) What interests you about this workshop? What do you hope to learn, and why? (Please do not exceed 150 words.) 3) What kind of laptop do you plan to bring? 4) What other online tools do you use? 5) Please let us know which forms of social media you use?


Novel Workshop Applicants: In addition to a current resume, please submit a one-page summary of your novel. Instructions for sending your first 100 pages will be given in a confirmation email after you press the submit button.


Teachers Workshop Applicants: In addition to uploading a current resume, please describe a favorite creative writing lesson plan (real or imagined) for high school students. As you write about this lesson, keep in mind that this can be an exercise in description, analysis, and an opportunity to be creative. (Please do not exceed 300 words.)
