Some people argue that the arts are superfluous in times of strife
and financial challenge. The arts are most easily cut, after all,
whether in the schools or libraries. But we believe it is precisely
in moments such as this, when we struggle to make sense of the world
around us, that the arts, and especially literature, matter most.
As Henry Miller wrote, "Art teaches nothing, except the significance
of life."
