Submission Guidelines
The 2011-2012 reading period runs from September 15, 2011 to January 15, 2012. All work must be submitted through our online submissions system. We aim to respond within four months, but this varies as the volume of submissions increases. Writers may submit no more than two pieces per genre per reading period. If writers submit more than two pieces, only the first two will be read. We do consider simultaneous submissions. Please note that you are submitting simultaneously in your cover letter. If you submit fiction or nonfiction, we ask that you immediately withdraw your piece if it is accepted elsewhere. If you have submitted a group of poems and one or more is accepted elsewhere, notify us at kenyonreview@kenyon.edu and we will note this in your submission file.
Please note that all submissions are considered for both The Kenyon Review and KROnline. We publish the best work we can find—this is the case for both KR and KRO. The two are aesthetically distinct spaces. We urge our submitters to read and become familiar with both.
Thank you for sharing your work with us! Please feel free to check the status of your submission on our online system. Also, please remember to keep the contact information in your user profile up-to-date. By submitting to The Kenyon Review, you are choosing to receive the Kenyon Review Newsletter—our monthly update.
We consider:
- short fiction and essays (up to 7,500 words)
- poetry (up to 6 poems). Please group your poems in a single document. You will not be able to submit your poems individually.
- plays (up to 20 pages)
- excerpts (up to 20 pages) from larger works
- translations of poetry and short prose
We do not accept:
- submissions sent by mail
- work that has been previously published
- unsolicited reviews
- unsolicited interviews
- email submissions (Please use the online submission page on this site)
We accept the following file formats: .DOC (Microsoft Word); .PDF (Adobe Acrobat); .RTF (Rich Text Format); .TXT (Microsoft Wordpad and Notepad, Apple TextEdit). Our preferred format is .DOC.
- When using our online submissions page, please be sure to add KR's email address (kenyonreview@kenyon.edu) to your spam blocker software so that you can receive correspondence from us.
- Translations must be accompanied by the work in the original language. The translator is responsible for the author’s permission to use his or her material.
- We generally follow the Chicago Manual of Style (15th Edition) and Webster’s Eleventh New Collegiate Dictionary. Authors planning to use end notes and/or citations should download our citation style guidelines (Acrobat Reader is required) before submitting manuscripts.
- Payment for accepted work is made upon publication. Authors retain their copyrights and will receive a contract upon acceptance.
