“You wanna see a fire truck? Burn up your house.”

It’s my daughter Zia’s first Christmas, which means — spoiler alert! — I finally get to play Santa. We have a foot-high rosemary “tree” and a gas-lit fire; we have the dregs of some eggnog in the fridge. I’m not sure what Christmas will mean to Zia — she’s thoroughly pagan, at present — but her father, a lapsed Unitarian, has a soft spot for the holiday. Last week we took Zia to her first movie — a free showing of “It’s a Wonderful Life” — and tomorrow we’ll read “A Christmas Carol” aloud. (My favorite passage comes early in the story. Scrooge to Marley: “You may be an undigested bit of beef, a blot of mustard, a crumb of cheese, a fragment of an underdone potato. There’s more of gravy than of grave about you, whatever you are!”) In the spirit of keeping Christmas well — as Scrooge is said to have done, at the story’s close — I offer a near-handful of videos, each of which has made me smile or laugh or (in the case of the final one) feel a bit nostalgic this evening.

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
